Things I Want To Happen (Smash Brothers Edition Vol. III)

Welcome to the FINAL part of my three part exploration of which characters I want to be in THE BIRDS of EVIL.

Pac-Man

Anyone who doubts the importance of including Pac-Man in Smash Bros. should remember that Pac-Man is the video game character. He created the whole concept of mascot-like characters in gaming. Without Pac-Man, where would we be?  Nowhere cool, I’ll tell you that much. As for what his actual moves would, that’s a little tricky.  Of course he’d have some fun stuff he could do with his mouth, chomping down on people and the like.  I’d love for him to bust out a hang-glider as a recovery move, but I doubt if anyone else looks back on good ol’ Pac-Man 2 as fondly as I. So we’d probably look towards the mildly popular, mildly well-received Pac-Man World games for moves. And I haven’t played those. So I’ll leave it up to others to figure out what should be done with him.  As for his Final Smash though, it should be obvious.  After breaking the Smash Ball open he becomes faster and larger, whereas all other characters become slower and …blue. Then it’s just a matter of catching everyone and sending them to their immediate death with one touch. It’s really just too perfect.

Simon Belmont

Simon Belmont has the potential to be one of those “cool” characters that everyone loves playing as.  He would, of course, use his whip quite a lot, and it would make for a sweet Indiana Jones style grab as well as recovery tether. For long-range attacks he could throw those little crosses he so fond of. Sadly, my familiarity with Castlevania games is pretty lacking, so I can’t really think of much beyond that.  The thing that would make me most excited about good ol’ Belmont though is the sweet Dracula’s Castle stage that would have to accompany him.  Just imagine attacking torches, which would then dissolve revealing health replenishing turkey legs, all to the sweet sounds of “Vampire Killer.” Mmm, it gives me tingles just thinking about it.

Mega-Man

Mega-Man is the great missing third party character in my opinion.  He just seems such a natural fit for the Smash Brothers series.  Again though, I haven’t really played many Mega-Man games, so I’m mostly in the dark as to how he would work. I suppose for a Final Smash though, he could turn into X and thus become bad-ass for a little while.

Bomberman

The last of the third party characters I’ll be talking about is good ol’ Bomberman.  He would be a fairly unique character, relying almost entirely on projectile moves that he can’t be thrown far, but have high explosive range.  I can’t really think of any good recovery moves that could be bomb-based though… For his Final Smash, I imagine a golden flame icon falling down and an animation of him grabbing it… for the next couple of seconds your bombs would have huge explosions and absurd, almost instant K.O. power.

Masks Link

Probably my favorite of all my ideas is Masks Link, who would be ripped right out of Majora’s Mask.  His play style would borrow heavily from Pokemon Trainer’s as he would actually be three separate characters, all rolled into one.  Like Pokemon Trainer, you could select at the beginning of the match which form you’d like to start in and in his intro on the screen you could see Young Link putting on a mask and becoming that form (accompanied by that chilling scream).  Like Pokemon Trainer, down-B would cycle between the three forms.

          Deku Link

Deku Link could shoot little bubbles that don’t do much out of his mouth for a standard B.  His A while running would be that classic Deku Link spin. For his B-up recovery, he’d shoot very high out of a flower and then float gently back to the stage with his little propeller flowers, giving him both good height and distance recovery, which would hopefully balance out his extreme lightness.  I’d really love to work the Deku Pipes into his moves somewhere too, if possible.

          Goron Link

Goron Link would obviously be the powerhouse of the trio, with brutal melee moves and devastating smash attack punches.  His side-B would have him rolling into a ball with spikes and tearing shit up.  It could also be used as a somewhat effective recovery move in the air.  Which would be good, because I see his up-B being not very good (hopefully balancing out his extreme power) at recovering.  He would leap a small distance into the air, before crashing down to the ground as a ball (a la Majora’s Mask).  For his standard-B he could maybe throw some sort of big punch, like D.K. or something.

         Zora Link

Zora Link would be quick and agile, kind of like playing as Shiek. His side-B would be the classic boomerang like blades he shoots out of his arms, which (maybe) you could have mild control of.  His up-B could be a kind of Squirtle like Surf move, where he shoots forward, covering a lot of distance, but not very much height, while spinning around rapidly.  His standard B- I see as a kind of counter move, like Peach’s, where he stands back, with his arm blade things shielding him and then hits the attacker with a jab of smash-attack like proportions.  His melee attacks would be kind of like Pit’s in that he’d be using the two blades, but also maybe like Meta Knight where he’d be slashing furiously a lot.

         Fierce Deity Link

And of course, anybody who’s beaten the shit out of Majora’s Mask can guess that Fierce Deity Link would have to be the Final Smash. He’d play mostly like “Adult” Link, but would be bigger and faster and he’d be shooting out all kinds of beams from his sword.  Fanboys would cry at the sight of it.

Midna and Wolf Link

Yeah yeah, another Link. He’s just too different in each game, and I want all his awesome forms to be in Smash Bros.  In this case, he’d be a wolf and Midna would be riding on top of him the hold time, laughing impishly.  For their standard-B I like the thought of Wolf Link kind of standing there charging up, while the big hand that comes out of Midna’s head locks onto anyone nearby, at which point Wolf Link tears into them (just like in the game!).  Their B-Forward would be a lunging move where Wolf Link latches onto an enemy and bites him repeatedly (kind of like Diddy’s or Bowser’s old B-Forward).  B-Up I see as one of those wonderful tether moves, where Midna’s giant hand would reach up and grab a ledge. When used on the ground it could be just an upward attack with the hand (similar to how Zero Suit Samus’ Up-B changes on the ground). B-Down I’m not really sure of. For the Final Smash Midna could transform into that huge thing that she can transform into when you’ve assembled all of that helmet she wears. I don’t think you would control her though, it’d probably be pretty short and sweet, like Ganondorf’s Final Smash. She’d just like …pound the stage or something.

Tingle

And the suggestion that pretty much every American on the internet will hate me for, but simply has to be said is Tingle.  Though my favorite Tingle is the one in Majora’s Mask, I would think his appearance should be based more on how he appears in Tingle’s Freshly Picked Rosy Rupeeland (or whatever it’s called).  Why does Tingle deserve a spot in Smash Brothers? He’s simply become too important.  Nobody who becomes familiar with Tingle doesn’t feel extremely strongly toward him, either loving or hating him. The way I see it, if a character can create such strong emotion in people, someone did something right.  And Tingle has become something of a star in his own right, with the release of Tingle Balloon Fight, and of course that game I mentioned above.  But what would he play like? Well, borrowing from the Balloon Fight connection, and his good ol’ Balloon in Majora’s Mask, he could float around a lot for a pretty awesome recovery move.  I also like to imagine his Tingle Tingle Kooloo-Limpah! Dance being incorporated into his moves, possibly as a really hard to pull off but super powerful Down-B move.  For his B and his side-B… I’m not completely sure… one of them could probably be him throwing rupees around.  I haven’t played Rupeeland, so I don’t know if there’s any moves in there that could be used.  For his Final Smash? I don’t know, he floats around the top of the stage dropping bombs? Maybe he could even hold onto a little Tingle-shaped Game Boy Advance to solidify the Wind Waker connection. Or again, there might be something usuable I could pull from Rupeeland, once I play it.  The way I see it, Tingle would be kind of like Jigglypuff. The first time you play as him, you think it must be some kind of cruel joke. But you find as you use him more and more that, with practice, victories are possible. And you’re having fun because you’re playing as a 35 year old man in green and red tights who believes he’s a fairy.

So yeah, that's what the ULTIMATE ROSTER should consist of. Pretty cool, right?

...right?
