Things I Want To Happen (Smash Brothers Edition Vol. II)
Welcome to part two of my three part exploration of which characters I want to be in the next Smash Brothers game, how they might work and blah, blah, blah... |
|---|
Krystal
Like, K.Rool, Krystal kind of feels like she should’ve been in Brawl. But she wasn’t, so now she’s on this list. She probably deserves a place in Smash Bros. more than Falco or Wolf even, simply because she could actually have her own unique moveset (although don’t get me wrong, I want Falco and Wolf to be in the next Smash Bros. too). She could use the staff from Star Fox Adventures mostly, and probably copy some of Fox’s moves from that game as well. Honestly, it’s been a long while since I’ve played SFA, so I don’t really have too good an idea what Krystal’s moves would be, just that they’d revolve around the staff and some of its magical properties. And she’s BRITISH.
Mii
I feel Nintendo really dropped the ball by not having Miis incorporated in some way into Brawl. In fact, they did a pretty poor job overall of representing the new hyper-casual genre of Nintendo things that have recently become so popular and integral to the company. Stuff like Wii Sports and Brain Age were relegated to an appearance only through music (which is still awesome). Including a Mii in the game would have been sweet. He could've used a tennis racket for an attack, and a bowling ball… although now that I think about it Peach already has both a tennis racket and golf club in her repertoire… well, how about actual golf balls then? It’s a charge-style move with your Mii swinging a club and shooting a golf ball at an unsuspecting player in an arc which changes with the amount of time the club is charged. Also, I haven't played Wii Fit (yet) but there's probably some sort of excercise moves or something). I know it’s a bit of a stretch coming up with Mii moves, but I really think it’s an important character we should see in the next line-up.
Tom Nook
Though I must praise Brawl for it’s inclusion of Smashville and a buttload of Animal Crossing trophies, there’s no ignoring the sad lack of a character to represent the important Nintendo franchise. Why should that character be Tom Nook you ask? Well, the most obvious choice, it seems, would have been either the standard “Boy” or “Girl” you pay off your debts with in the games… but they aren’t really unique individuals in and of themselves and with the Mii already representing the everyman it seems redundant to include one of those characters. And after ruling out that possibility it can only really come down to Totakeke or Tom Nook. My feeling is that while K.K. might be the face of Animal Crossing, Tom Nook is the heart and soul. His moveset would, however, reflect the average "Animal Crosser" as opposed to a simple shopkeep. A fishing rod as a tether-recovery technique. A shovel as a B-down, maybe even kicking up some dirt at the player. The bug catching net would be a must (I can’t remember how many times I used it to piss off my animal neighbors back in the day) and the axe would appear as well, in some fashion or another. A Final Smash is a little tougher to wrap my mind around. The best thing so far that I’ve managed to settle on would be a bunch of leaves which fall from the top of the screen, then become furniture which must be dodged. A Lot like PK Starstorm except …. more charming. Another reason why Nook deserves this role more than Totakeke is because these moves (and I feel these would have to be the moves for an Animal Crossing character) wouldn’t seem right coming from him. Although, I’m certainly not opposed to his eventual inclusion in another Smash Bros. even further down the line.
Dr. Eggman
Ah, onto the third-party dudes. While I’m pretty much against the inclusion of more than one character per non-Nintendo franchise being in Smash Bros., I feel Eggman is the one exception. And for anybody out there who thinks it should be Knuckles, Tails, or even Shadow who should be playable instead… you’re wrong. Eggman’s moves would obviously be based around machinery and electronics. His recovery move would be a jetpack capable of covering great distances, but not going very high (kind of like R.O.B.’s, except not as unfairly useful). His standard-B could be some kind of laser… even though there’s already too many people with lasers for B’s… but his would be more… Sonic-y. His B-Forward could be some kind of powerful dash involving that jet-pack again (I see it as being kind of similar to Peach’s forward B somehow)… he’d probably be right at home using some kind of shield for a down-B. His Final Smash… I waffled for a while on. I couldn’t decide whether or not I should have him climb in his iconic suit from Sonic 2 and wreak all kinds of mayhem. Ultimately I decided he should get in his good ol’ Flying Eggman thing and swing around a giant checkered ball a la the end of Green Hill Zone. And really, once I thought of that, I just couldn’t really see anything being better.
Also, I would cry tears of happiness if this was an alternate costume for him.
Banjo and Kazooie
These guys just feel like they’d fit in in a Smash Bros. game too well. They were an important part of the Nintendo 64’s library and probably the greatest example of the goodness that could come from the old Rare/Nintendo alliance (Donkey Kong Country games aside). Banjo and Kazooie have so many moves in their games it’s really difficult to weed out which ones deserve a place in a Smash Bros. game. Especially since it’s been quite a while since I’ve played either game. But there’s plenty of potential there… I can feel it.
Mog
I debated long and hard (in my head) over how the Final Fantasy series could best be represented in Smash Brothers. Despite the wealth of support Cloud Strife gets everywhere else on the internet, I nixed him pretty quickly, just as I nixed any other person that appears in just one Final Fantasy game. After all, I wanna represent the series as a whole, not just Final Fantasy VII. So then I looked to Mario Hoops 3-on-3 for inspiration. Generic Black Mage and White Mage had been a good call, and for a while I wrestled with the idea of having one of them. But though their movesets would be awesome, I ultimately decided they’d be too …generic. Chocobo was another heavy contender, though I finally crossed him off the list too, mostly because he already has a fairly popular series of games himself, and I would want it to be more Final Fantasy than Chocobo. Finally, I settled on Mog. Moogles have been something of a staple in Final Fantasy games since they appeared in Final Fantasy V (or was it III?) and could also prove to be adaptable to a very traditional Final Fantasy moveset. I’d probably wanna get some Fire, Ice and Thunder in there. Maybe also Aero, as a recovery move? There’s a lot of spells, and there’s certainly a desire to want to fit them all in. For melee attacks, I would probably look to Final Fantasy VI, that being the most Moogle-filled Final Fantasy game, and have him use a pike, especially for smashes. For Mog’s Final Smash, I was again assaulted by a number of ideas. Should it be something grand? Meteor? Holy? Somehow they didn’t seem quite right for Mog, especially after their hyper-important parts they played in the plot of Final Fantasy VII. Should he summon Ifirit or Shiva? Ramuh? Maybe even Alexander or Bahamut? They all seemed like pretty good ideas, especially Bahamut. But then it dawned on me. Chocobos! Mog and Chocobos go together like Riker and trombones, so it seemed only fitting that the screen would be assaulted by a herd of Chocobos. Chocobos ROCK.
So like, omg, part III is next and it's totally the last one! Dude!
